A knee brace is created by connecting a diagonal support from a vertical surface to a horizontal beam.
While knee bracing is optional to support a platform or davit arm, avoiding use of braces will require cantilevered beams to be substantially larger. Knee braces allow the supported area to use more economical structural shapes by distributing the weight of the horizontal beam to a wall or column.
